The Buckingham Palace Stakes is a seven-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards at Royal Ascot.
It was introduced at the 2002 Royal meeting when the festival was extended to five days. In 2015 it was replaced by the Commonwealth Cup but was re-instated in 2020.
Notable past winners include Attache (2003), Regal Parade (2008), Louis The Pious (2014) and Motakhayyel (2020).

Famous Buckingham Palace Stakes Winners
The inaugural running in 2002 was won by Demonstrate, trained by John Gosden and ridden by Richard Hughes. He was rated only 83 that day but went on to finish fourth to Nayyir in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes later that season. He was kept in training as a four-year-old and won a listed six furlong race at Windsor.
In 2003 the Buckingham Palace Stakes was won by Attache, trained by Michael Jarvis and ridden by Philip Robinson. The five-year-old defied top weight of 9st 12lbs and later won a conditions race at Chepstow. He was later sold to race in Dubai but never quite reached the same level of form.
The 2008 winner Regal Parade would go on racing until 2016, winning 13 of his 104 races. He won the Ayr Gold Cup in the same season, taking the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup in 2009. His other victories included the Hackwood Stakes and the Prix Maurice de Gheest in 2010.
Louis The Pious won this race for David O’Meara and Silvestre de Sousa in 2014. He would also go on to enjoy a successful career as a sprinter. His biggest victory came in the 2014 Ayr Gold Cup, after which he finished third in the Group 3 Bengough Stakes at Ascot. He won seven of his 48 starts.
Motakhayyel won the race in 2020 for Richard Hannon and Jim Crowley. He successfully overcame a 7lbs weights rise to win the Bunbury Cup at the Newmarket July Festival on his next start, holding of the late dash of Royal Hunt Cup winner Sir Busker. Motakhayyel was beaten in his next five races but won the Bunbury Cup for a second successive season in 2021.
The good record of Buckingham Palace Stakes winners was further enhanced by 2021 winner Highfield Princess. She won a listed race at Chelmsford on her next start and was then placed at Group 2 and Group 1 level. She achieved her breakthrough Group 2 success in the Duke Of York Stakes 2022.
Two of the last seven winners of the Buckingham Palace Stakes ran in the Victoria Cup at Ascot on their previous start. The return of the race provides a welcome alternative to sprint handicappers as well as seven-furlong specialists. The last two winners both followed up successfully.
Motakhayyel won the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket while Highfield Princess won the Queen Charlotte Stakes at Chelmsford.
Three winners ran in the Bunbury Cup but the other two were unplaced.
Four of the seven winners registered at least one further victory that season.
Looking further back in history, both Regal Parade (2008) and Louis The Pious (2014) successfully dropped back to six furlongs to win the Ayr Gold Cup.
Buckingham Palace Stakes Betting Trends
Horses aged four to six have the best record in this race with Treadwell (2010) the only winning three-year-old to date.
The oldest winner was Uhoomagoo for Kevin Ryan and Neil Callan in 2006.
Three horses have managed to defy big weights here; Attache (2003) 9st 12lbs, Jedburgh (2005) 9st 8lbs and Eton Forever (2012) 9st 8lbs.
No favourite has been successful in the last seven renewals which have produced an average winning SP of almost 20-1.
Louis The Pious (2014) started at 33-1 and Lightning Cloud (2013) was a 25-1 shot.
All but one of those races attracted a maximum field of 32 runners.
A high draw could be an advantage here with five of the last seven winners having started from stall 26 or higher.
Buckingham Palace Stakes – Top Trainers and Jockeys
Kevin Ryan is the only trainer to saddle more than one Buckingham Palace Stakes winner. He struck with Uhoomagoo in 2006 and again seven years’ later with Lightning Cloud. Neil Callan rode both horses to victory and was also aboard 2012 winner Eton Forever, trained by Roger Varian. No other jockey has won it more than once.
